So.Many.Games

I am in the midst of many games right now, some nostalgic (Temple of Elemental Evil), some average (Afro Samurai), some incredibly shitty (Quantum Theory) and one that is completely blowing me away - Enslaved: Odyssey to the West.

This game is from the talented folks at Ninja Theory who made the ahead of it's time Heavenly Sword. Heavenly Sword was beautiful, had some of the best motion capture and voice acting this side of Uncharted but had framerate and pacing issues that ultimately stalled it and held it back from a blockbuster. It was also really, really short and seemed designed as a rental game.

Enslaved on the other hand shows the maturity of the developer and they bring in many of their strengths from Heavenly sword and few of the weaknesses. It is a true single player game and it features a pair of incredibly real, likeable and human characters in the form of Trip and Monkey. PC Videogame Review: Insane Robots

Insane Robots is a new title from Playniac that features card-based battles but proudly takes the expensive CCG purchases and time-consuming deck customization out of the equation. The end result is a game that is very simple and fun to play but ultimately becomes a shallow experience over time.

Insane Robots is not as, well, Insane as the title would imply. There are no crazy endeavors or world-altering gameplay mechanics; instead the story revolves around a series of Robots labelled insane or dangerous because they do not conform. The odd crew of robots is discovered as each arena is completed and cover a host of archetypes not typically associated with mechanical creatures.

As I played through the game, the characters reminded me of the off-the-wall residents of the movie Robots. I have kids so I watched that one a lot and each one had a tremendously unique personality. The Social Side of PAX East

In a previous article I had discussed the core PAX East experience as you wander the halls of the massive BCEC in Boston, but what about the chance to socialize and have some fun outside of the con? One of the great things about the PAX East ecosystem is that developers and the community itself organize tons of events for chances to let loose and have some fun.

Community Run Events

Every year there are a number of consistent events at PAX East that offer a wide range of fun activites from Board Game nights to pubcrawls. These events are a way for PAX goers to meet and have some more social and personal experiences together outside of the crowded Expo halls.

Pre-PAX dinner – this is completely community run and, while I did not attend this year, I have gone many times in the past. This dinner is a ticket based event that includes all fees to get a full meal (drinks not included). There are always raffles and plenty of laughs.
