So.Many.Games

I am in the midst of many games right now, some nostalgic (Temple of Elemental Evil), some average (Afro Samurai), some incredibly shitty (Quantum Theory) and one that is completely blowing me away - Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. This game is from the talented folks at Ninja Theory who made the ahead of it's time Heavenly Sword. Heavenly Sword was beautiful, had some of the best motion capture and voice acting this side of Uncharted but had framerate and pacing issues that ultimately stalled it and held it back from a blockbuster. It was also really, really short and seemed designed as a rental game. Enslaved on the other hand shows the maturity of the developer and they bring in many of their strengths from Heavenly sword and few of the weaknesses. It is a true single player game and it features a pair of incredibly real, likeable and human characters in the form of Trip and Monkey. They are both escapees from a slaver ship, but Trip wakes up first and slaps a slave ban

Videogame Review: Hades

Developer Supergiant Games has a terrific pedigree starting with it’s groundbreaking debut title Bastion . They then released the stellar Transistor , the odd but interesting Pyre and now, with their best game yet, Hades . Hades started as an early access title on the newly launched epic game store in December 2018. The initial game was extremely enjoyable but was obviously incomplete and still a work in progress. Many updates followed adding features, weapons, new Gods as well as a Steam release in 2019. Eventually Supergiant was able to add all of their desired features and released the version 1.0 of Hades across both the Steam and Epic platforms. This is a rogue-like style of game so it was perfectly designed to fit the Early Access mold as replaying the game over and over is part of the core design. Hades, in no uncertain terms, is a masterpiece of aesthetics, design writing and sheer fun gameplay mechanics. The core principal of the game has us guiding the anti-hero Zagreus, so

The Games of PAX Online – Unpacking and Solasta: Crown of the Magister

As mentioned in my look at the PAX Online Experience there are tons of games demos available to check out during the show. There are pros and cons to the virtual experience while checking these many games out. It is definitely nicer to try them at home in a calm environment but I do miss the crowd feedback and visual look and feel of the demo stations. Regardless I checked out many of the games across a variety of genres and had a great time. I really appreciate these slices of gameplay being presented in such a great way. In many cases on the steam page there are also developer playthroughs which add to the experience. I played through quite a few games and some of them made an impression and I definitely want to see more. Here are a couple of games I enjoyed over my first few days checking out the PAX Online demo experience.
