I am in the midst of many games right now, some nostalgic (Temple of Elemental Evil), some average (Afro Samurai), some incredibly shitty (Quantum Theory) and one that is completely blowing me away - Enslaved: Odyssey to the West.

This game is from the talented folks at Ninja Theory who made the ahead of it's time Heavenly Sword. Heavenly Sword was beautiful, had some of the best motion capture and voice acting this side of Uncharted but had framerate and pacing issues that ultimately stalled it and held it back from a blockbuster. It was also really, really short and seemed designed as a rental game.

Enslaved on the other hand shows the maturity of the developer and they bring in many of their strengths from Heavenly sword and few of the weaknesses. It is a true single player game and it features a pair of incredibly real, likeable and human characters in the form of Trip and Monkey. PAX East 2019 Board Games Preview: Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker and Clank!

As mentioned PAX East is much more than videogames and community events there is a huge part of the show that is focused around tabletop games. I had a chance to meet with Dire Wolf Digital’s upcoming games Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker and Clank: Upper Management Pack at the show and both were very interesting and a lot of fun.

Dire Wolf could have taken the easy route and made a relatively simple game based on the massively popular Game of Thrones brand but instead they created a deep and interesting game based on loyalty and treachery.

In this 5-8 player game everyone gets a character to start the game and they are all based on the TV series regulars. One character is named King or Queen and the others are randomly and secretly assigned traitor or loyalist characteristics.

PAX East 2019 Videogame Preview: Mistover

As a monstrous fan of Darkest Dungeon I was very interested in checking out Mistover at PAX East which the developer billed as a mashup of that game and Etrian Odyssey. Having visited the booth and chatted with the development team, I am very intrigued by what I saw.

The art style is very similar to Darkest Dungeon, as is the dark scope of the project, but the rest is a very different experience. Gameplay in Mistover is divided between overland exploration and encounters. The exploration uses resources such as light and food, which requires careful resource management to balance everything.

Traps and environmental effects can compromise the characters and impact health and resource availability. The goal is to reach the exit of the dungeon or area and get as many resources as possible on the way. The Mist is always around and enemies are always hungry to attack the characters. Bushes can be used to hide in and character skills can clear obstacles or help the party disappear.
